FORT WORTH – An East Fort Worth woman faces possible animal-cruelty charges after investigators removed at least 200 animals – half of them dead – from her home. About 100 dead cats were found Thursday wrapped in foil inside three refrigerators at a home in the 6100 block of Craig Street, police said. Another roughly 100 live cats and five dogs also were found inside the home. All of the surviving animals were taken to the city’s Animal Control shelter.

The living conditions at the home were extremely poor, police said.
But Evangeline Chambers, who lives at the house, denied that the animals had been treated poorly.
“I’ve been rescuing animals for 15 years,” Ms. Chambers said Friday. “It’s a passion. I take very good care of them.”

The animals were free to roam her two-story house, which was equipped with syringes, food, medication and pet carriers. The cats, Ms. Chambers said, were like family.
“Everybody had a name,” Ms. Chambers said as she tearfully read off some of their names.

The animals wrapped in foil in the refrigerators were awaiting cremation, she said, adding that they had been nursed and cared for until their deaths.
She said she stored them in the refrigerators because she did not have enough money to pay for the cremations.

Keane Menefee, manager of the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Division, said the cats and dogs were seized under health- and safety-code violations. A civil hearing will determine whether the animals remain at the shelter or are returned to Ms. Chambers, officials said.

“You have to shake your head,” Mr. Menefee said. “I don’t question whether she loved the animals. But you can’t give 100 animals the kind of love and care they deserve. You can’t have a bond with that many animals.”
