ISU Accused of Using Shelter Dogs for Medical

Training

08-11-2008 Fox12 News, USA

Boise, Idaho — Idaho State University is unlawfully using shelter dogs for trauma life support training, according to a federal complaint. The non-profit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine filed the complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Idaho Humane Society in Boise is opposed to the use of shelter animals for medical research and training — a practice called pound seizure.

Executive Director Jeff Rosenthal says the training in this case uses dogs already slated for euthanasia. But he also believes training mannequins are a much better and more humane way to teach medical personnel.

“The people relinquishing their animals to the shelters — and these were either stray animals and some of them were owned animals — did not know that the animal would end up being utilized for medical training,” said Rosenthal. “And I think that’s part of the problem here.”

The federal complaint says one of the dogs surrendered to ISU was a black and white border collie that was still trailing its leash when it was picked up.
