Foxes trapped in skateboard bowl
14-11-2008 BBC News, UK
Two foxes were freed from a park after they became trapped in water at the bottom of a skateboard bowl. A passer-by called the RSPCA after seeing the foxes up to their necks in water and unable to climb up the bowl slope in Brandwood Park, Birmingham.
One of the foxes
managed to run off after scrambling its way out when animal collection officers arrived.
The second fox was too weak to escape. He was treated by RSPCA officers and released back into the park later.
Heavy coats
The skateboard bowl became filled with water following heavy rainfall at the beginning of the week.
Animal collection officer Boris Lasserre said: “The animals’ water-logged coats made them heavy and prevented them from getting a good run-up.
“The rain had made the sides slippy and the foxes were clearly exhausted.”
The first fox panicked when Mr Lasserre put his ladder into the bowl on Monday and managed to drag himself out by getting a clawhold on the top of the bowl.
The second was too exhausted and hypothermic.
“He was warmed up under a heat lamp, put on a glucose saline drip and given some food.
“He responded well to treatment and I released him back into the park the following evening,” Mr Lassere said.
He criticised the design of the skateboard bowl saying there are better designed ones with steps at one end to allow creatures, or people, to get out.
